Women's Hockey: Shuchuk's hat trick leads Norwich past Salve Regina, 6-1

NEWPORT, R.I. – Senior forward Maki Shuchuk (Madison, Wis.) of the Norwich University women's ice hockey team scored a hat trick to lead the Cadets to a 6-1 win over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon. 

Norwich (3-0-1, 2-0-0 NEHC) swept the four points on the weekend with the victory as 13 different players found the scoresheet to lead a balanced offensive attack. 

Senior forward Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season with Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) and Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up the assists on the goal coming just 4:11 in. 

Shuchuk scored her first of the game for what would prove to be the game-winning goal off an assist from Samantha Benoit (Bow, N.H.). 

Salve Regina got a goal back at the 16:40 mark of the first period to cut the lead to 2-1. 

Shuchuk scored her second of the night on the power play with an assist from Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland and Labrador) picking up the assist at the 3:58 mark of the second period to extend the lead to 3-1. 

Sophomore Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) scored her second of the season off assists from Michelle Masperi and Tiberi at the 12:48 mark of the third period. Senior Nicole Goebel (Saskatonn, Saskatchewan) scored her first goal of the season off assists from KC Herne (Akwesasne, N.Y.) and Muranda Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta). 

Shuchuk closed the scoring and completed her hat trick at the 18:14 mark of the third period with assists from Blossom Truel (Stratford, Wis.) and Carly Menges (Novelty, Ohio). 

Freshman Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.) picked up her first collegiate victory in first career start, making seven saves to earn the shutout. 

Norwich outshot Salve Regina 52-8 for the game. 

The Cadets face No. 1-ranked and four-time defending national champion Plattsburgh State on Wednesday at 7 p.m in their final game to close a five-game road trip to start the season.
