Women's Hockey: Norwich tops Southern Maine, 10-0

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team continued its explosive offensive week, downing Southern Maine 10-0 on Friday afternoon in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at Kreitzberg Arena.

Senior forward Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) tallied five points to lead the Cadets' offense in the victory and extended their unbeaten streak to eight straight to start the season. Norwich's 7-0-1 start ties the best start in program history.

Sophomores Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine) and Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.), as well as junior Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) each scored twice as well to lead the NU offense.

Freshman goalie Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.) picked up her first collegiate shutout after making six saves to improve to 2-0-0 on the season.

Norwich jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 4:26 mark of the first period with Hulst scoring her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Rossini. Schwenzfeier cycled the puck along the right wall to Rossini, who curled out of the corner and fed a pass to the slot where Hulst finished it off into the top corner of the net.

Maggie Conroy (Batavia, Ill.) doubled the lead to 2-0 at the 8:19 mark of the first period with an unassisted goal. Conroy took the puck off the boards in the neutral zone and drove to the net. She had her first attempt blocked but kept skating forward and knocked the puck home off a scrum in the crease.

Rossini increased the lead to 3-0 at the 16:22 mark with a power play goal off an assist from Schwenzfeier. Schwenzfeier skated the puck up the right boards and sent a crossing pass over to Rossini in front and she redirected the puck into the net for her third goal of the season. Hulst picked up the second assist on the goal for her second point of the night.

Hulst scored her second of the night and sixth of the season just 24 seconds into the second period to make it 4-0 Norwich. Schwenzfeier and Carly Menges (Novelty, Ohio) picked up assists on the goal. Menges had the initial shot from the point that Schwenzfeier tipped on net and then Hulst potted the rebound.

Schwenzfeier scored the first of three straight power play goals at the 3:34 mark of the second period off an assist from Menges. Labbe made it 6-0 at the 7:12 mark of the second period with an assist from Conway.

Senior Nicole Goebel (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored her third of the season on the power play off assists from KC Herne (Akwesasne, N.Y.) and Kelley Madden (Novelty, Ohio). Herne's assist was her eighth of the season and extended her point streak to seven straight games.

Norwich added three more goals to cap the scoring with two coming from Conway and another from Rossini.

Norwich finished 5-for-6 on the power play.

Southern Maine's Britney Evangelista made 55 saves, which is the second most in a single game in program history and was a new career high by 10 saves.

Lambert made her best save of the game with perhaps a goal of the year candidate, robbing Jill Hannigan at point blank range with a sprawling glove save after laying out across the crease.

Norwich will look to extend its unbeaten streak to what would be a new program record of nine straight games on Saturday when it hosts Univ. of New England at 1 p.m. in Kreitzberg Arena.
