Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – For the second straight game the Norwich University women's soccer team took a NCAA Tournament team from a year ago to overtime. After falling 1-0 to Colby-Sawyer on Thursday, the Cadets followed up with a scoreless 2 OT tie vs. the College of Staten Island on Saturday night to kick off the NU Women's Soccer Classic.
Norwich (0-1-1) was once again led by a strong goalkeeping performance from junior Leandra Flores-Nieves (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who turned aside all 13 shots she faced to keep CSI (0-0-1) off the scoreboard for 110 minutes.
The Cadets were outshot 26-5 in the game. CSI had a couple of golden scoring chances, including one in the first five minutes when Krystina Rodriguez drilled a shot off the cross bar that bounced back out.
Defending CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Lauren Smith also hit the crossbar in the 60th minute for CSI with a shot from the right wing that ricocheted off the post and away from the goal.
Norwich had a great scoring chance toward the end of first overtime when Madison Oelker (West Liberty, Ohio) sent a crossing pass from the right that Jordan Kacur (Red Creek, N.Y.) couldn't get all of and the ball deflected wide to the left.
The Cadets also were on the unfortunate end of what appeared to a hand ball in the box in the final minutes of the second overtime that went uncalled.
Nicole Mignone stopped both shots she faced for Staten Island.
The NU Women's Soccer Classic continues tomorrow as CSI takes on Johnson State at 2 p.m. The Cadets will close out the tournament vs. Johnson State on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
