Volleyball: Norwich Flies Past Albertus Magnus, 3-0

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Norwich University women's volleyball team posted a straight-set victory over Albertus Magnus Friday evening. The Cadets move to 2-7 overall on the year while securing their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference win of the season.

Defeating the Falcons (2-9, 0-2 GNAC) via scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-14, Norwich nets its first conference victory since Oct. 25, 2014, a straight-set win against the Falcons in the same venue.

Norwich was led by freshman Marissa Perrotti (Moultonborough, N.H.), who posted seven kills on 12 attacks alongside one error. Sophomore Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) dished out 14 assists while junior Katie Crane (Avon, N.Y.) also reached double-digit figures, setting up 11 of her team's 29 kills. Defensively, freshmen Monika Schneider (Hollis, N.H.) and Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) led the team with nine digs.

The Cadets overcame an early 6-2 deficit in the first set, but rallied to a 22-22 deadlock thanks to an Oliver kill. Back-to-back attacking errors by Albertus Magnus preceded a Norwich service error, but a ball handling error at set point by the hosts handed the Cadets a key victory in the opening stanza.

Norwich powered itself to a 6-0 lead in the second set before an Albertus Magnus timeout led to a Falcons kill, snapping the point streak. A lengthier point-scoring run ensued as the Cadets rattled off eight-straight points to post a dominant 14-2 lead. A late rally by Albertus Magnus was for naught as a Schneider kill, set up by Oliver, propelled Norwich to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Despite leading in kills in the decisive third set, Albertus Magnus committed eight attacking errors while Norwich hit at an impressive .257 clip (10-1-35) to wrap up a 3-0 win for the Cadets. Freshman Ashley Nau (Sunrise, Fla.) registered two kills without an error while Perrotti added three kills on five errorless swings down the stretch.

Ashley David led Albertus Magnus with 12 kills on 33 total attacks. Marielis Muriel set up 22 of her team's 29 kills while David picked up a double-double, recording 13 digs on the evening.

Norwich returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 28 as it takes on Emmanuel (Mass.) in a 7 p.m. road match.
