Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Norwich University women's soccer team dropped a double-overtime heartbreaker to Colby-Sawyer College on Thursday afternoon in its 2016 season opener.
Junior goalkeeper Leandra Flores-Nieves (Colorado Springs, Colo.) made 20 saves, but Colby-Sawyer's Emily Martin finally found the back of the net with 6:35 left in the second overtime period to lift the Chargers to the victory.
Martin tucked a shot just underneath the cross bar from 30 yards out to lift Colby-Sawyer (1-0, 0-0 NAC) to its fifth straight win over Norwich.
Colby-Sawyer outshot Norwich (0-1, 0-0 GNAC) 46-6, but the Chargers were unable to solve the stellar keeping from Flores-Nieves for just over 103 minutes. The NU goalkeeper made multiple incredible game-saving saves in the first overtime session.
She made two incredible kick saves on Nell McQueeney in the 92 minutes and then followed up with another brilliant stop in the 95th minute on Lizzie Jorgensen.
Junior captain Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.) led the Cadets with two shots on goal, while sophomore Kate Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) added another to account for the NU offensive bids.
Norwich will return home to host the fourth annual NU Women's Soccer Classic over the Labor Day Weekend. The Cadets host the College of Staten Island at 5 p.m. on Saturday and then they take on Johnson State at 5:30 p.m. on Monday to close out the three-day classic format tournament.
