Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Saint Joseph's College (Maine) in a GNAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Monks swept the Cadets with a 5-0 win in game one and a 17-7 win in game two.
In game one St. Joseph's opened the scoring with a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead before extending the margin with two runs in the third and one in the fourth to lead 4-0.
The Monks added a run in the top of the sixth before the Cadets threatened in the bottom of the frame.
Junior Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) ledoff with a single and fellow junior Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) followed with a single of his own. Monk pitcher Marc Poirier then induced a strikeout and a double play to get out of the jam.
Pedley finished the game with two hits while freshman Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.), sophomore Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.), freshman Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) and freshman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) all contributed hits in the loss.
Josh Partridge picked up the win for St. Joseph's to improve to 4-1. He threw five innings and allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out one batter.
Norwich senior Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out four batters and falls to 2-4 on the year.
Junior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) pitched well in relief for the Cadets. He pitched two innings and allowed just one hit and one walk.
In game two the runs came early and often as the Monks took a 1-0 lead after one inning and added a run in the second to lead 2-0.
Norwich got one run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Caldwell that scored Sirois (who had reached on an error) to make it 2-1.
The Monk bats exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth inning but the Cadets weren't done. Senior Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) ripped an RBI double and Barlow delivered an RBI single to short to make it 7-3 after four.
St. Joseph's responded with four more runs in the top of the fifth but, once again, the Norwich bats wouldn't remain silent as senior John Flanagan (West Groton, Mass.) hit an RBI double down the left field line and Caldwell followed with a two-run double to center. Barlow made it three doubles in a row with an RBI double to left field to cap the scoring in the inning and make the score 11-7 through five.
The Monks offense continued to roll with four more runs in the top of the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 17-7 final.
Travis Godbout collected the win for St. Joseph's to improve to 5-1. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in four innings of work.
Junior Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-9 on the season. He surrendered 10 hits over three and two-thirds innings and allowed seven runs (two earned) while walking one batter and striking out one.
Caldwell led the Cadet offense with two hits and three RBIs while Sirois, Pedley, and Barlow all delivered mulit-hit games.
The Monks improve to 22-11 overall and 12-2 in the GNAC while the Cadets fall to 4-31 and 2-12 in conference.
The doubleheader served as the regular season finale for the Cadets and the final home games for seniors Brian Baker, John Flanagan and Brian Whaley.
