Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Norwich University baseball team travelled across Lake Champlain to take on Plattsburgh State University in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
In a game that saw all of its runs scored in the fourth inning, the Cardinals topped the Cadets 4-1.
Deadlocked at 0-0 in the top of the fourth freshman Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) ledoff with a single to the shortstop. Fellow freshman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) followed with a single to right-center to push Lynch to second. Junior Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners before sophomore Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Lynch and giving Norwich a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the fourth loading the bases on two hits and a walk before junior Billy Rombauts reached on an error to tie the game 1-1. Junior Ray Flynn then delivered an RBI groundout to give the Cards the lead 2-1. Two batters later freshman Frank Finkbeiner ripped a double to right-center, scoring two and making it 4-1.
Junior Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) delivered the last Norwich hit, a two-out, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh but that was all the Cadet offense could muster.
The lead would remain as freshman Matt Fox pitched six innings of two-hit ball, allowing one earned run and striking out five to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Junior T.J. Montalbano was credited with his first save of the year after throwing three innings of relief, allowing only one hit and one walk while fanning five batters.
Freshman Chandler Whipple (Solon, Ohio) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-2 on the season. He started the game and tossed three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk. He struck out two.
Fellow freshmen Anthony Carter (Woburn, Mass.) and Peter Madsen (New Boston, N.H.) pitched in relief for Norwich. Carter allowed only one hit and one walk in three and one-third innings of work while striking out one batter. Madsen pitched one inning and allowed one hit.
Plattsburgh improves to 6-27 on the season while Norwich falls to 4-28. The Cadets are next in action on Thursday, travelling to Lyndon State College for another non-conference matchup. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
