Baseball: Norwich Splits With Rivier

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHUA, N.H. – The Norwich University baseball team split a GNAC doubleheader at Rivier University on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) went three-for-three and scored the winning run on a double steal in the top of sixth inning in game one for a 4-3 Cadet win while the Raiders got a complete game, two-hit performance from senior Nick Gagnon in a 3-0 win in the second game.

In game one Norwich jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second after junior Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) ledoff with a double. Caldwell followed up with a single and Sirois came around a batter later on an error to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead. The rally continued as freshman Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) delivered an RBI single and fellow freshman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) launched an RBI double.

The Raiders responded with two runs in the bottom of the second and one in the fourth to tie the game 3-3.

Caldwell ripped a one out single in the top of the sixth inning and senior Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) pushed him to third with a single. The Cadets then executed a double steal with Baker taking second and Caldwell crossing the plate to take the lead back 4-3.

Baker then came on to pitch in the bottom of the seventh and allowed just one hit to pick up his third save of the year.

Senior Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) pitched four innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks. He struck out two batters.

Freshman Matt Paze (Carlisle, Mass.) collected the win pitching in relief to improve to 1-0 and pick up his first collegiate win. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out one batter in two innings of work.

Junior Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) also collected a hit in the win.

In game two the Raiders scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the fifth while Gagnon pitched a gem.

He pitched all seven innings and allowed just two hits while striking out one batter to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Junior Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) took the loss for the Cadets to fall to 0-8. He allowed three earned runs over four and one-third innings and surrendered six hits and two walks. He fanned two batters.

Sophomore Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.) and junior Kyle Lamorey (Northfield, Vt.) picked up the two hits for Norwich in the losing effort.

With the split Norwich now stands at 4-27 overall and 2-10 in the GNAC while Rivier sits at 10-24 overall and 4-8.

The Cadets are next in action on Tuesday for a non-conference road game at Lyndon State College. That game is set for 3:30 p.m.
