Baseball: Rams Sweep Cadets in GNAC Doubleheader

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team was swept in a GNAC doubleheader by Suffolk University on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams shutout the Cadets 10-0 in game one and took game two by a 9-2 final score.

Junior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) kept Suffolk off the scoreboard for three innings on the mound before the Rams offense exploded for nine runs in the top of the fourth inning. 

Suffolk added one more run in the top of the fifth to make it 10-0 and freshman pitcher Kevin Sinatra never looked back as he pitched a complete-game four-hitter. He walked one batter and fanned four to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Farquharson fell to 0-5 on the year after allowing six runs (three earned) in three and one-third innings of work. He allowed two hits and four walks while striking out three.

Freshman Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) led the Cadets offensively going two-for-four with a double while senior Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) and sophomore Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) picked up hits as well.

The Rams got their offense in early in game two striking for one run in the first inning and three in the second to take an early 4-0 lead.  They added two more in the top of the fifth before the Cadet offense broke up the shutout.

Lynch picked up an RBI single and fellow freshman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) contributed a sac fly to pick up an RBI as well.

Suffolk pulled away with two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 9-2 final.

Lynch finished two-for-four and Caldwell chipped in another hit in the effort. Also picking up hits were juniors Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) and Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.).

Freshman Jacob Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for Norwich after allowing six earned runs on 12 hits. He walked two batters and struck two out. He falls to 0-

Sophomore Ryan Pordes picked up the win after tossing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out one batter. He improves to 1-2.

Norwich falls to 3-21 and 1-5 in conference play while Suffolk improved to 22-6 and 6-2 in the GNAC. 

The Cadets are back in action on Tuesday hosting Castleton University for a non-conference nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
