Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Norwich University baseball team opened play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with a doubleheader at Johnson & Wales on Saturday.
The Wildcats swept the Cadets with a 10-2 win in game one and a 3-0 final in game two.
Norwich got the scoring started in game one as freshman Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) ledoff the game with a walk. He then stole second and third base before being driven home on a single by junior Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.).
Norwich made it 2-0 in the top of the third as Lynch hit a leadoff single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice. Pedley then delivered his second RBI single of the day, scoring Lynch from second base.
The Wildcat offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third and they never looked back, adding one run in the fourth and four in the sixth.
Senior Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) took the loss for the Cadets after throwing three and one-third innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out four while falling to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Jacob Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) threw one and two-thirds innings of perfect relief striking out one batter.
Fellow freshman Matt Paze (Carlisle, Mass.) allowed four earned runs on five hits in one inning of relief. He struck out one batter.
In game two Johnson & Wales broke open a scoreless game with a run in the bottom of the third inning before adding two in the sixth for a 3-0 win.
The Cadet offense just couldn't find a way to score, garnering just four hits from Pedley, juniors Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) and Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) and sophomore Spencer Duhamel (Manchester, N.H.).
Junior Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) was saddled with the loss for the Cadets after a strong outing. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in five and one-third innings while striking out four batters. He falls to 0-4 on the season.
Junior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) retired both batters he faced in a relief effort.
The Cadets are back in action on Monday when they travel to Middlebury College for a nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
