Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass. – The Norwich University baseball team traveled to Gordon College for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.
The Fighting Scots swept the Cadets by a score of 8-2 in game one and 4-0 in game two.
Norwich jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game one after back-to-back singles by freshmen Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) and Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) to open the frame. Junior Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) then reached on an error that allowed Lynch to cross home plate.
Gordon answered with one run in the third inning and seven in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
The Cadets got one run back in the top of the seventh after junior Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) ledoff the frame with a double. Freshman Dustin Spatz (Bernville, Pa.) followed with a double of his own to score Sirois and make it 8-2, where the game would remain.
Junior Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) was saddled with the loss for Norwich after throwing three and two-thirds innings. He allowed eight runs (all unearned) on six hits and five walks while striking out two batters.
Freshman Mike Ortiz (New Britain, Conn.) pitched one and one-third inning of hitless relief allowing just one walk while fellow freshman Anthony Carter (Woburn, Mass.) threw a perfect inning of relief striking out two.
In game two the Fighting Scots nabbed a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead and expanded it to 3-0 in the third. Gordon added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 4-0.
Junior Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) led the team with two hits and Pedley added a double while sophomore Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) picked up his first hit of the season.
Freshman Jacob Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for Norwich to fall to 0-4 on the season. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in four innings. Fellow freshman Matt Paze (Carlisle, Mass.) tossed three innings of relief allowing one earned run on one hit while striking out two batters.
The Cadets fall to 1-15 on the season and were scheduled to be next in action on April 3rd at MCLA. That non-conference doubleheader had start times of 1 and 3:30 p.m before it was postponed due to expected weather conditions. No makeup date has been announced.
