Softball: Cadets conclude Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Norwich University softball team closed out its eight-game spring break trip to Florida this morning with a pair of losses to Trinity (Conn.) and Babson.

Trinity had two big innings in the third and fourth, scoring five and six runs respectively to turn a 1-0 Norwich lead into an 11-1 mercy-rule win for the Bantams after five innings.

Senior Taylor Morris (Haverhill, N.H.) went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Cadets' offense. She brought home Payton Warner (Harwich, Mass.) for Norwich's only run in the top of the first inning.

Freshman Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Vt.) took the loss for Norwich, giving up six earned runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out four.

In game two, Norwich (0-8) fell behind 3-0 to Babson (6-6), but rallied to score two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2. However, the Beavers scored three runs in the top of the seventh to pull away again for good.

Senior Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) had the big hit in the second game with a two-run single that scored Warner and Mallori Cesario (Bradenton, Fla.)

Johnson went 5.2 innings, giving up two earned runs, walking five and striking out four. Morris came on in relief, giving up two earned runs on four hits.

Norwich returns to Vermont this weekend and will take on Castleton University on March 30th in a non-conference doubleheader.
