Box Score 2 VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team concluded its Florida trip with a doubleheader against Kenyon College on Friday.
The Lords swept the Cadets with a 3-2 win in game one and a 5-1 final in game two.
In game one Kenyon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning and added two more in the top of the fourth before Norwich broke open the shutout in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) opened the inning with a bunt single. Junior Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) followed with a single of his own to push Lynch to third base.
Sophomore Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn) then delivered a pinch-hit two-run double to center field to plate both Lynch and Pedley to cut the deficit to 3-2, where the score would remain.
Norwich got a strong start out of senior pitcher Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) as he threw four innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits. He walked two batters and struck out three while taking the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Jacob Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) threw three scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits and a walk while fanning two batters.
Lynch finished two-for-three at the plate while teammates senior Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) and junior Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) each added a hit.
In game two Kenyon scored a run in both the second and third innings and added three in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Cadets were able to score in the top of the seventh inning after Ryan drew a leadoff walk. Junior Kyle Lamorey (Northfield, Vt.) entered as a pinch funner for Ryan and one out later Gates singled to center, pushing Lamorey to third.
Lamorey came around to score on a balk, but that would end the scoring for Norwich.
Baker delivered the other hit for the Cadets.
