Baseball: Norwich Drops Pair of Games to Geneva and Earlham

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team was swept in a pair of games against Geneva College and Earlham College on Tuesday.

Norwich dropped game one to Geneva 15-3 and fell 17-2 to Earlham in game two.

In game one the Golden Tornadoes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Cadets responded with a run in the bottom of the frame.

Freshman Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) led off the inning with a hard single to the shortstop and was advanced to second on a sacrifice by fellow freshman Dustin Spatz (Bernville, Pa.). Senior Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) then singled (en route to a 3-for-3 day at the plate) to advance Lynch to third base.  Junior Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) then grounded out to third base, plating Lynch and cutting the lead to 3-1.

That proved to be as close at Norwich would get as Geneva added three runs in the second, one in the third and fourth innings, five in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Baker picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth that scored Lynch and Spatz added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to score junior Kyle Lamorey (Northfield, Vt.) from second base.

Spatz and Lynch finished with two hits each.

Junior Brian Albert (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was hit with the loss after throwing one inning and allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits and three walks. He struck out two batters and falls to 0-2 on the season.

In game two Earlham broke open a scoreless game with nine runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Norwich broke the shutout in the top of the fifth inning after freshman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) singled with one out. He advanced to second on a ground out and came around to score on a fielding error to slim the score to 9-1.

Earlham responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and five in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 17-1.

The Cadets scored one run in the top of the seventh inning after back-to-back walks were drawn by Lesco and Lynch to lead off the inning. Freshman Chris Leach (Vergennes, Vt.) then sacrificed them up a base before Sirois grounded into a fielders choice that allowed Lesco to cross home and make it 17-2, where it would stay.

Sirois finished the game with two hits to lead Norwich offensively.

Freshman Chandler Whipple (Solon, Ohio) took the loss for the Cadets after pitching 2 and 1/3 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and one walks. He struck out two batters and falls to 0-1 on the year.

With the losses the Cadets fall to 1-9. Norwich is next in action on Friday for a doubleheader against Kenyon College. Those games are set for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
