Box Score 2 VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Norwich University baseball team opened its spring break trip with a doubleheader split against Geneva College on Saturday.
The Cadets won game one 3-0 while the Golden Tornadoes took game two by a 4-0 final.
Norwich senior Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) tossed six shutout innings en route to his first win of the season and freshman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to guide the Cadets to their first win of 2016.
Whaley only allowed four hits and two walks while striking out one on his way to the victory.
All three Cadet runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth as senior John Flanagan (West Groton, Mass.) and junior Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Spencer Duhamel (Manchester, N.H.) then reached on an error that allowed Flanagan to score to give Norwich a 1-0 lead. Lesco then ripped a single to left field, scoring both Haggerty and Duhamel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Duhamel and senior Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) also had hits while Baker pitched the seventh inning, allowing just one hit while striking out a batter.
In game two Geneva broke open a scoreless game, also in the bottom of the fourth inning, on an RBI single by senior JC Ackerman.
In the fifth inning the Golden Tornadoes loaded the bases before sophomore Joey Luciana cleared them with a double to left field to make it 4-0.
Flanagan, Lesco, junior Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.), freshman Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) and fellow freshman Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) all registered hits in the losing effort.
Junior Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) took the loss for the Cadets after throwing four innings of five-hit baseball. He allowed one earned run and one walk while striking out one batter.
After the split Norwich stands at 1-5 on the season while Geneva's record is 3-3.
The Cadets are back in action on Sunday, taking on Albright in a doubleheader set for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
