Men's Basketball: Norwich Ends Season with 75-67 Win Over Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – The Norwich University men's basketball team wrapped up their 2015-16 season this afternoon with a 75-67 win over Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at the Muldoon Gymnasium.

The Cadets finish at 7-18 overall and 4-14 in the GNAC, while the Raiders stand at 4-21 overall and a 4-14 conference mark. Both teams will miss the GNAC Tournament for the second straight year.

Norwich was paced by the sharp-shooting effort from senior Alex Preckol (Westford, Mass.) who netted 18 second half points (20 total) to lead the comeback. Sophomore Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) contributed a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald (Winchester, Mass.) added 12 points while classmate Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) had 10 points and seven rebounds in the season ending victory.

Senior Lance Handy (Easton, Mass.) led the Raiders with 14 points in a reserve effort while classmate Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, Vt.) added 13 points in his final appearance. Senior Cullen Donovan (Wethersfield, Conn.) recorded 10 points and classmate Anthony Simmons (Stamford, Conn.) dished out five assists. Freshman Isaiah Ruffen (Haverhill, Mass.) pulled down a team high 10 rebounds and junior Kevin Francis (Cromwell, Conn.) chipped in 12 in the loss.

Trailing 29-23 at the half, Norwich improved their shooting percentage in the second half, hitting 51.7 percent from the floor, but trailed for majority of the stanza until Booth and Preckol made back-to-back treys to give the Cadets the 58-55 lead with 5:42 to play in the contest.

It would be a back-and-forth battle until the Cadets broke free on a 9-0 run to lead by seven, 69-65, with one minute remaining in the game. Rivier looked to tie up the contest once again but struggled to find the basket down the stretch as the Cadets held on for the 75-67 victory.

The Cadets made 8-of-20 from long range with the Raiders matching the same on 8-21 shooting. Norwich pulled down a team total of 47 rebounds to the Raiders' 30 and picked up 15 assists with 38 points coming from the Maroon and Gold's bench.
