NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's volleyball team used 20 service aces to dispatch the Badgers from Johnson State College in straight sets on Tuesday. Norwich moves to 3-9 overall on the year while Johnson State falls to 2-14 following the non-league match.
The Cadets secured its fifth-straight 3-0 win over Johnson State via scores of 25-11, 25-11 and 25-13.
Norwich set a season-high mark with 20 service aces and did not commit a reception error for the first time since at least the 2012 season. Sophomore Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) helped the Cadets with a career-best eight service aces while also contributing with four kills on 10 errorless attacks – she also registered nine assists.
Sophomore Emily Jordan (Dalton, Mass.) set a career-high mark with six kills, chipping in with three service aces and racking up nine digs on defense to tie for the team lead. She also posted seven receptions without an error, tying with senior Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.) to lead Norwich.
Junior Katie Crane (Avon, N.Y.) set up 13 of her team's 28 kills while Jordan joined Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) with a team-leading nine digs.
Leading by a 9-6 margin in the first set, Norwich pulled away with a 7-0 scoring run and never looked back. A 5-0 stretch for the Cadets in the second set continued the momentum for the hosts and another five-point streak put Johnson State away in the third set. Norwich reached double-digit team kills in the first and second sets.
Breanna Laughlin posted 10 of her team's 14 kills on the night for Johnson State. Laurel Hubbert-Severance handed out 11 assists while Kaitlin Boucher posted nine digs defensively to lead the Badgers.
Norwich will return to action Thursday, Oct. 6 as it heads to Lyndon State College for a 6 p.m. tilt with the Hornets. The Cadets will look to avenge an earlier five-set loss at the hands of Lyndon State on Saturday, Sept. 10.
