Box Score PAXTON, Mass. – The Norwich University football team racked up an impressive 554 total yards of offense, propelling the Cadets to a 28-7 victory over Anna Maria College on Saturday. Norwich moves to 2-4 on the year, improving to 2-1 within the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Cadets offense clicked throughout the entire contest, racking up 24 of the game's 35 first downs and churning out 407 net yards of offense on the ground. Anna Maria (0-6, 0-3 ECFC) outgained Norwich through the air (174-to-147 yards), but AMCATS quarterbacks tossed three interceptions on the day.
Junior Quincy Williams (Brossard, Quebec, Canada) put his team ahead in the second quarter, rushing the ball home nine yards to cap a nine play, 80-yard drive. Following the extra point by senior Wesley Medeiros (Gilford, N.H.), the Cadets owned a 7-0 lead with 12:06 remaining in the first half.
Norwich signal-caller Philippe Bazinet (Otterburn Park, Quebec, Canada) would score the fourth rushing touchdown of his career with 5:51 to go on the second quarter clock, putting the Cadets up 14-0 after another Medeiros point-after attempt.
The Cadets would see Medeiros punt the ball 55 yards to open the second half, but the first offensive play by Anna Maria was intercepted by senior Tyler Oppelt (Latham, N.Y.). With excellent field position, Bazinet would connect with senior Grant Troxell (Flint, Texas) for a 42-yard touchdown to propel the Cadets to a 21-0 lead following yet another Medeiros point-after.
Freshman Patrick Brown (Pooler, Ga.) would later produce a 61-yard touchdown run, setting a career-high mark, to put the Cadets ahead by a 28-0 margin to cap a two play, 80-yard drive for Norwich. Anna Maria would score a late touchdown in the third quarter, but the visitors would hold on for the decisive victory.
The Cadets defense produced an outstanding game, limiting Anna Maria to only 27 yards on the ground. Senior captain Benjamin Hummer (Annapolis, Md.) led his team with eight total tackles, including two for a loss, while senior Micah Bosseler (Colorado Springs, Colo.) produced five tackles, including three for a cumulative loss of 22 yards, and one sack.
Junior Austin Roberts (East Bridgewater, Mass.) also excelled on defense for Norwich, posting two interceptions and five total tackles. As a team, the Cadets posted eight tackles for a total loss of 30 yards.
Quincy Williams finished the day with 22 carries, netting 123 yards on the ground while scoring his 11th career rushing touchdown. Brown ended his day with 98 yards on only eight carries while Bazinet had yet another strong rushing game, carrying the ball 16 times for a total of 89 yards and a touchdown.
Troxell led his team with 84 receiving yards on three carriers while classmate Pierre Noel (Manchester, N.H.) hauled in a team-best six catches for 39 yards. Bazinet would finish his day with 10 completed passes on 18 attempts, throwing for 141 yards and one touchdown.
Freshman Darius Jones-Clark finished the day with 129 passing yards for Anna Maria while sophomore Joseph D'Onofrio led his team in net rushing yards (33) and net receiving yards (59). Three different AMCATS players posted 12 tackles – the home team also recovered three fumbles by Norwich.
Norwich returns home Saturday, Oct. 22 as it welcomes the Bison from Gallaudet University to Northfield, Vt. for a 12 p.m. showdown on Sabine Field.
