Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) on Monday at Andrews Hall. Norwich falls to 4-10 overall and to 1-4 within the Great Northeast Athletic Conference while St. Joseph evens its overall record at 9-9, improving to 3-3 against the league.
Norwich was dispatched via set scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-14. The Cadets entered play on Monday having won the first eight matches of the all-time series, but the Blue Jays have won the last three matches and the last two of those by 3-0 match scores.
The Cadets were led by four kills from freshman Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and sophomore Emily Jordan (Dalton, Mass.). Junior Katie Crane (Avon, N.Y.) and sophomore Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) handed out six assists apiece while freshman Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) was responsible for nine of her team's 41 total digs.
Norwich fell into an early hole, committing 10 attacking errors and posting four service errors to gift the visitors an easy 14 points. The Cadets were able to make a brief run, notching the score at nine, but the Blue Jays yielded only five more points to Norwich throughout the rest of the set.
The Blue Jays opened up a 10-4 lead in the second set despite the Cadets opening up an early 3-0 lead, sparked by strong serving by senior Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.). St. Joseph would eventually score the final seven points of the second stanza, sending Norwich into a 2-0 hole in the match.
Once again, the Blue Jays offense flexed its muscle in the third set and opened up a dominant 14-4 score before Norwich attempted a comeback. The home team would elevate its score to 14, but by then, a Hannah Lemek kill at match point ended any chance of a comeback by the Cadets.
Shytasia Williams and Lemek tied for the team lead with seven kills. Brenna Miller handed out 25 assists and picked up the double-double with 10 digs. Demetria Eiger also filled the stat sheet with 10 digs of her own.
Norwich will welcome St. Joseph (Vt.) to Andrews Hall this Wednesday, Oct. 12 for a 7 p.m. match.
