Box Score AUBURNDALE, Mass. – The Norwich University women's basketball team came up short with the 74-72 loss to Lasell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest Tuesday night.
After trailing 70-66 with under two minutes remaining in the game, the Cadets would make a layup but find themselves in foul trouble as the Lasers hit all four free throws for the final score as time expired.
With the win, Lasell improves to 9-7 on the year and 2-2 in league standings, while Norwich falls to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in the GNAC.
Junior forward Heather LeBlanc (Sanford, Maine) led the team with 18 points and 14 rebounds for a double double, while sophomore guard Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) posted 12 points and 19 rebounds for a double double on the night. Classmate Shyann Josler (Thetford, Vt.) contributed 13 points, while junior guard Kayla Mercer (New Britian, Conn.) added 13 points on the night.
After trailing by one point at the break, 38-37, the Cadets looked to get ahead of the game but struggled to find the basket, hitting just 30.8 percent (4-13) from the field while the Lasers took advantage of the miscues and scored 21 points, hitting 50 percent of their shots in the third quarter for the nine point lead.
Norwich rebounded in the fourth quarter with a 12-0 run to retake the lead, 62-59, before Lasell shifted the momentum with back-to-back treys and held onto the lead until the final buzzer for the 74-72 victory.
At the end, the Cadets shot 37.7 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the stripe, scoring 19 points on seconds chances and 38 points in the paint, but Lasell would hit 44.4 percent of its shots from the floor and 75 percent from the charity stripe and score 13 points off of Norwich's turnovers in the game that saw four lead changes the six knots on the night.
Norwich will return to GNAC action at home on Saturday, Jan. 23 as they host Albertus Magnus for the 3 p.m. contest.
