Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's basketball team dropped a 83-49 non-conference match to Bowdoin College on Thursday night.
The loss puts Norwich at 8-6 on the year, while Bowdoin improves to 10-4 overall.
Sophomore guard Shyann Josler (Thetford, Vt.) led the Cadets in scoring with 16 points, hitting a pair of treys, while classmate Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) contributed 12 points along with the eight rebounds and three steals on the night. Junior forward Heather LeBlanc (Sanford, Maine) pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds and posted four points in the paint.
Twelve players netted a basket for Bowdoin with sophomore guard Lauren Petit (Medfield, Mass.) posted a team-high 24 points. Petit would tie the school record of seven three-pointers on the night. Senior Shannon Brady (Scituate, Mass.) added 10 points and seven rebounds with a steal and a block, while freshman Abigail Kelly (Bombay, N.Y.) led the rebound efforts with eight to go along with the six points on the night.
Josler hit a pair of treys followed by a layup to jump start the Cadets' strong 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the game before the Polar Bears responded with a 10 unanswered points to take the 11-8 lead. Josler added two additional points for Norwich in the first quarter but Bowdoin would score six more points for the 17-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Bowdoin tightened its physical defensive stance in the second quarter as the Cadets struggled to hit their marks. The Polar Bears forced Norwich to turn over the ball 20 times, seven on steals, and score 23 points off of turnovers. The Cadets looked to rally late in the first half but shot 30 percent from the floor as they trailed 44-23 at the break.
The Polar Bears continued their strong attack in the second half, hitting four shots from beyond the arc in the third quarter and four more baskets from the field for 23 points. The Cadets continued to push their way through the game but the margin of 37 points was too much to rebound as Bowdoin closed out the contest with the 83-49 win to give head coach Adrienne Shibles her 300 career win.
Norwich finished the night hitting 28.3 percent of its shots from the field and 30.4 percent from the three point line. Bowdoin shot 39 percent from the floor in the game and made 31.3 percent of its shots from beyond the arc and scored 36 points in the paint and 18 points on second chances. Bowdoin's bench scored 59 of the 83 points as Norwich had 11 points scored off the bench.
Norwich is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 16 against Anna Maria College for the 1 p.m. conference matchup.
