Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Featuring a lineup comprised of seven returners and four new faces, Norwich University women's volleyball team faltered in its opening two matches of the 2015 season, falling to Smith College in four sets and to host Western New England College in three sets Saturday afternoon.
Norwich (0-2) opened the tri-match by falling to Smith 25-19, 23-25, 25-12, 25-11. The Golden Bears then downed the Cadets 25-15, 25-10, 25-10 in the closing match.
The Cadets enjoyed success both at net and the line. Norwich combined for 38 kills, six service aces, 121 digs and four blocks in both matches
Junior outside hitter Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.) led the team with 10 total kills along with 16 digs and a block, while senior Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) recorded nine kills, three service aces, eight digs and led the team in blocks with four.
Sophomore setter Katherine Crane (Avon, N.Y.) was credited with 29 assists and 15 digs on the day as junior Kristen Brewer (Hopedale, Mass.) came up with 48 digs in the two matches played for the Cadets.
Norwich will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 9 as the Cadets host Green Mountain College in the 7 p.m. home opener.
