Colby-Sawyer trips up Cadets 3-0

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team fell 3-0 to Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday night on Sabine Field at Haynes Family stadium in non-conference action.

Norwich (0-1, 0-0 GNAC) got 10 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Leandra Flores-Nieves (Colorado Springs, Colo.), but it wasn't enough as the two-time reigning North Atlantic Conference (NAC) champion Chargers scored three times in the first half en route to the win.

Colby-Sawyer (1-0, 0-0 NAC) got on the board in the ninth minute when its leading scorer from a year ago junior Rachel Quaye put the Chargers up 1-0, burying a shot into the left corner of the net off an assist from Vicky Driscoll. Driscoll picked the ball off a NU defender and fed a through ball to Quaye on the counter attack and then she took care of the rest.

Nell McQueeney increased the Colby-Sawyer lead to 2-0 in the 30th minute by burying a shot from inside the six-yard box off a crossing pass from the right from Olivia Kurowski.

Kurowski scored in the 37th minute on a header off a corner kick from Maura Kane to make it 3-0 Colby-Sawyer and cap the scoring on the game.

Flores-Nieves made two brilliant saves in the second half to keep Norwich in the game, robbing Quaye of a second goal with 17:10 left on a diving save to her right. She also made a terrific save on Corrie Hoyt with 3:25 left in the second half. Hoyt was in on a breakaway and Flores-Nieves dove and get a hand on a low shot to deflect it just enough and allow Shelby Rutherford (Ridgefield, Wash.) enough time to come and clear the rebound away.

Norwich registered three shots on net with freshmen Jordan Kacur (Red Creek, N.Y.) and Kristen Dukette (Northfield, Vt.) each getting one, as well as sophomore Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.).

Colby-Sawyer outshot Norwich 23-5 en route to winning their fourth straight vs. the Cadets. The Chargers also took the lead in the all-time series and now hold a 9-8-2 advantage on NU.

Norwich returns to action on Friday, Sept. 4 on the first day of the NU Women's Soccer Classic, when it hosts Southern Vermont at 2 p.m. on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
