Baseball: Cardinals sweep Cadets in home finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Plattsburgh State in its final home games of the season, a non-conference doubleheader, on Tuesday afternoon at Garrity Field.

The Cardinals swept the Cadets after posting two come-from-behind wins, 7-3 in game one and 6-3 in the second contest.

In game one Norwich trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth before two runs came in on a double by sophomore Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) that scored juniors Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) and Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.).

The Cardinals came back with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead, then tacked on two more in the top of the sixth on a two-RBI single by senior Frank Buksa to make it 7-2.

The Cadets got one run back in the home half of the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by sophomore Tim Dargan (Bremerton, Wash.) that scored freshman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) and cut the deficit to 7-3.

Cardinal starter Scott Orr (junior) was able to escape further harm in the seventh to pick up the complete-game win. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three batters to improve to 6-3 on the season.

Sophomore Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) took the loss for Norwich after allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits through four and one-third innings. He walked one batter and struck out three to fall to 0-1 on the year.

The Cadets jumped out to an early lead in game two as Caldwell reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. He then advanced all the way to third on a throwing error that allowed sophomore LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) to score. Billy Whaley then singled to center, plating Caldwell and giving Norwich a 2-0 lead. A third Cadet run scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0 after one inning.

The Cardinals capitalized on Cadet errors and timely hitting to mount a comeback in the top of the fourth as junior TJ Montalbano scored on an error and senior Brian Latulipe landed an RBI single in right field to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the top of the fifth Plattsburgh put up four runs due to multiple Norwich fielding errors (including one with the bases loaded) to take a 6-3 lead.

Thomas drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh but the Cadets couldn't advance him to fall by a 6-3 final.

Sophomore Andrew Kramer picked up the win for the Cards to improve to 3-2 after throwing six innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits. He didn't surrender a walk and struck out five batters.

Junior Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) fell to 0-5 on the year with the loss. He allowed six runs (one earned) on six hits in four and two-third innings of work. He allowed four walks while striking out four batters.

Norwich concludes its season on Wednesday, April 29th on the road at Southern Vermont College. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
