Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team played host to Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Garrity Field.
The Wildcats swept the Cadets with a 9-2 win in game one and a 5-2 victory in the second contest. With the two losses Norwich was eliminated from the GNAC playoff picture.
JWU struck early in game one as sophomore Carlos Sanabria delivered an RBI groundout to third base for a 1-0 lead.
Sanabria then doubled in the top of the fifth inning, scoring senior Kory Ferullo. Junior Jordan Pilarski scored Sanabria with an RBI single, then sophomore Ryan Cabral plated Pilarski with an RBI double to make it 4-0.
Norwich got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Spencer Duhamel (Manchester, N.H.) each drew bases-loaded walks to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Wildcats tacked on five runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run homer by Ivan Reyes to stretch the lead to 9-2, where the game finished.
Junior Lane Compton picked up the win after tossing five and one-third innings and giving up two earned runs on ten hits. He walked two and struck out one and improves to 4-1.
Junior Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) took the loss after throwing five innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits. He walked to batters and fanned four and stands at 0-4 on the season.
In game two it was Sanabria again who gave JWU a first-inning lead, this time on a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 1-0.
The Wildcats picked up three more runs in the top of the second thanks to a trio of Cadet errors that stretched the lead to 4-0.
Thomas delivered Norwich's first run in thebottom of the third with an RBI single that plated sophomore Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) to cut the lead to 4-1. Sophomore Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) followed with an RBI double that scored Thomas to make it 4-2.
JWU capped the scoring in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Tom Ekow that put the score at 5-2.
Freshman Keith Grant nabbed the win after going six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. He walked three and fanned four to improve to 2-1.
Senior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) took the loss for the Cadets after going the distance on the hill. Over seven innings he allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out four batters and falls to 2-2 on the season.
The Wildcats record now stands at 15-11 overall and 8-4 in the GNAC, while the Cadets sit at 7-16 overall and 2-12 in conference.
The Cadets are next in action when they host Colby-Sawyer in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 26th. The games are set for noon and 2 p.m.
