Box Score 2 NASHUA, N.H. - The Norwich University softball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games on Sunday afternoon vs. Rivier University.
Norwich (5-17, 3-11) squandered a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning after it looked like the Cadets were on their way to earning a split. However, Rivier rallied for three runs off NU ace senior pitcher Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) to win with a walkoff RBI single by Shaylyn Freitas.
NU had built up a 3-1 lead with RBI hits from Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.), Jordan Day (Andover, Mass.) and Payton Warner (Harwich, Mass.). However, it wasn't enough as Rivier rallied for the three runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the season sweep.
Baita went 6.1 innings, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out three and walking two.
In Game 1, Rivier had a big six-run fourth inning to pull away from the Cadets and never look back. Freitas once again did the most damage for the Raiders, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, all coming from a grand slam to power Rivier to the victory.
Warner went 3-for-4 and Justina George (Wallingford, Conn.) went 2-of-2 with a run scored. Hershberger drove in both Norwich runs in the opener.
Norwich will look to bounce back on Tuesday when it travels to Lasell College for another GNAC doubleheader. The Cadets will then host Simmons at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
