NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman defenseman Alec Brandrup (Rochester, Minn.) scored a pair of goals while sophomore goalie Ty Reichenbach (Billings, Mont.) made seven saves to record a shutout to lead the Norwich University men's ice hockey team to a 3-0 win over Castleton State in the Battle of Vermont rivalry on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich (19-2-1, 15-0-0 ECAC East) moved to within three points of clinching its 17th straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East regular season title with the victory.
The Cadets took the lead at the 14:49 mark of the first period on a goal by freshman Justin Charbonneau (Bromont, Quebec) and never looked back en route to the victory over their intrastate rival.
Charbonneau fired a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle past Castleton State goalie Ryan Mulder off a setup from senior Gerard McEleney (Canton, Mass.) and freshman Mitch Byrne (Onaping, Ontario). The goal was Charbonneau's third of the season.
Norwich added to its lead at the 17:40 mark when Brandrup scored his first of the night by picking off a clearing attempt by Castleton at the blue line and firing a slap shot past Mulder to make it 2-0 Cadets.
The Cadets increased their lead to 3-0 at the 19:10 mark of the second period with Brandrup scoring on a 5-on-3 advantage with another shot from the point off an assist from Brian Rowland (Waltham, Mass.)
Reichenbach stopped all seven shots he faced to improve to 10-0-1 on the season. Mulder made 27 saves to fall to 4-9-0.
Norwich outshot Castleton 30-7 and went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Spartans were 0-for-3.
Castleton drops to 7-14-0 overall on the year.
Norwich wraps up its home regular season schedule on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it hosts Skidmore at Kreitzberg Arena in the 2015 Fan Appreciation Weekend finale. The game will also serve as the Cadets' senior day where they will honor their six seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
