Women's Hockey: Three-goal third lifts Cadets past Nichols 3-0

Box Score

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team scored three goals in the third period to break a scorless tie en route to a 3-0 win over Nichols College on Tuesday night in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.

Norwich (16-4-3, 13-0-2 ECAC East) got goals from seniors Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.) and Liz Gemmiti (Toronto, Ontario), as well as an empty-net tally from Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) to extend its league unbeaten streak to 31 straight games.

Despite outshooting Nichols 29-10 through the first two periods, Norwich was unable to solve the Bison senior goalie Tori Gianformaggio for the first 40 minutes.

Finally, Gemmiti broke the seal on the scoring with her first goal of the season coming off an assist from freshman defenseman Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.) on the power play to give the Cadets a lead it would never look back from at the 6:52 mark of the final period. Less than a minite later, Anderson scored her seventh goal of the year to stretch the lead to 2-0, also coming on assist from Tiberi.

Schwenzfeier capped the scoring with 13 seconds left with an empty-net goal for her seventh of the year to make it 3-0 Norwich.

Freshman goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) stopped all 14 shots she faced to pick up the victory and improve to 5-0-1 on the season.  The shutout was also the second of her career. Gianformaggio finished with 36 saves for Nichols and she fell to 6-9-0 on the season.

Norwich is one point away from clinching its fifth straight ECAC East regular season title with two games remaining in the regular season. The Cadets travel to Castleton State on Friday for a 7 p.m. faceoff with the Spartans. They then wrap up the season at Holy Cross on Saturday at 2:05 p.m.

NU currently leads Salve Regina and Saint Anselm by four points, who sit tied for second place with 24 points.
