Women's Basketball: Norwich Falls to Trinity 65-61 in Hockenbury Championship

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Trinity College took the title of the 2015 Ed Hockenbury Classic following a 65-61 win against Norwich University. Bay Path University finished third following a 90-87 thriller against Maine-Presque Isle (UMPI).

UMPI's Katie Patenaude (Presque, Isle, Maine) , Bay Path's Dallas Jackson (Springfield, Mass.), Norwich's Heather LeBlanc (Sanford, Maine) and Trinity's Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) were named to the All-Tournament team, while Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) of Trinity was named the tournament Most-Outstanding Player.

Trinity 65, Norwich 61

Three players scored in double-figures en route to Saturday's 65-61 win against Norwich in the championship game. With the win, the Bantams improve to 6-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Cadets to 5-3.

Sophomore guard Shyann Josler (Thetford, Vt.) scored a team-best 18 points along with three rebounds, two assists and a steal. LeBlanc added 17 points and pulled in eight rebounds, while sophomore Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) contributed 11 points and eight rebounds on the day.

Raiti scored a team-best 18 points for Trinity, with Griffin contributing 16 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) posted 11 points and five rebounds, while senior Melanie Mills (Woodstock, Conn.) was perfect from the stripe, hitting all four of her attempts, to finish with eight points.

Trinity jumped out to an 8-3 lead before the Cadets responded on an 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game. The next 12 minutes would be a back-and-forth affair that saw the game tied four times and nine lead changes through the first half. Norwich broke the 23-23 tie at the 2:43 mark with a 7-0 run to close out the first half for the 30-23 lead at the break.

Trinity responded early in the third quarter with a 13-3 run to retake the lead, 36-33 through the quarter before a pair of LeBlanc layups in the fourth quarter gave Norwich the lead once again. Both teams traded baskets as Josler nailed a three-pointer to knot it at 48 points apiece with just 6:19 remaining in the game. Trinity quickly retook the lead and went on an 8-0 run to extend the margin, 60-51, with just under three minutes to play. The Cadets looked to rally from behind but came up short in the end for the 65-61 decision.

Both teams were matched-up evenly with Trinity collecting 44 rebounds to Norwich's 34. The Cadets shot 39.3 percent from the floor to the Bantams' 40.7 percent. However, it all came down to the free-throws as Trinity completed 68.4 (13-19) of their shots from the stripe with Norwich making 9-of-19 (47.4 percent).

 

Bay Path 90, Univ. of Maine-Presque Isle 87

After trailing by 54-32 at the half, UMPI rallied late in the second half to trail by just two points in the fourth quarter for the 84-82 score with just 1:21 remaining in the game. The Owls tied it up on a pair of free throws from senior guard Amanda Allen (Limestone, Maine) before Bay Path retook the lead and made it a three point game. With 15 seconds on the board, UMPI would knot it at 37 on a Sydney Churchill's (Fort Fairfield, Maine) three-pointer before Jackson drilled in a jumper before being fouled hard and made the and-1 at the line for the Wildcats' 90-87 victory in the wild finish.

The Wildcats' had two players posting double-doubles with Jackson putting up a team-high 32 points and 10 rebounds and junior Aaliyah Gordan (Springfield, Mass.) adding 14 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Elizabeth Haylette (Terryville, Conn.) contributed 12 points and three rebounds as Haleigh Bassett (Millers Falls, Mass.) and Briana Kujawaski (Webster, Mass.) added nine points.

Patenaude and junior guard Kylee Alton (Burnham, Maine) scored 17 points apiece with Alton adding four steals, while junior forward Amanda Hotham (Fort Fairfield, Maine) recorded a double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds. Churchill would finish the day with 10 points and a pair of steals.
