Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team used a four-goal second period to pull away from Bowdoin College en route to a 6-0 victory on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in non-conference action.
Freshman Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland & Labrador) had a goal and an assist, while classmate Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) tallied two assists to lead a balanced offensive effort in the Cadets seventh straight victory.
Sophomore goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) also made 23 saves to pick up her third shutout of the season and fifth of her career, while improving to 3-1-0. Norwich has now posted shutouts in six of its last seven games, outscoring its opponents 29-1 in the process.
Sophomore forward Muranda Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta) opened the scoring at the 17:03 mark of the third period when she one-timed a pass from Labbe from behind the net to give the Cadets a lead they would never look back from. Labbe chased down a long outlet pass in the zone and outmuscled a Bowdoin defender, lifting her stick behind the net. She centered the puck to an oncoming Toews who wrapped it off the left post and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Norwich (7-2-0, 6-0-0 NEHC) carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, outshooting Bowdoin 9-6.
The Cadets increased their lead to 2-0 at the 7:59 mark of the second period with Foley notching her first collegiate goal with a terrific solo effort to corral a pass along the far half boards, skate past a defender and throw a move on the goalie before beating her with a quick wrist shot five-hole.
NU scored three more times in a span of 4:31 late in the second period to pull away from Bowdoin with Rachel Bellio (Johnstown, Colo.), Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) and Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.) all scoring goals.
Bellio got the run started with a great breakaway goal, splitting the two Bowdoin defensemen off a pass from sophomore defenseman Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.). Bellio went forehand, backhand and flipped the puck over the right pad of Bowdoin starting goalie Lan Crofton to make it 3-0 Cadets.
Schwenzfeier scored her fifth goal of the season at the 17:47 mark on a rebound off assists from Erin Joyce (Manchester, N.H.) and Foley to make it 4-0.
Murphy notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 18:33 mark when she perfectly tipped a slap shot from Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) in front of the net past Crofton to make it 5-0 Norwich. Labbe picked up the second assist for her second helper of the night.
