BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team won its first game of the 2015-16 season with a 3-0 shutout victory over the University of New England on Friday afternoon at the Alfond Forum in each team's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) debut.
Norwich (1-2-0, 1-0-0 NEHC) got goals from freshman Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta), sophomore Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) and senior Madison Gallagher (Kirkland, Quebec) en route to the 3-0 victory and extend its league unbeaten streak to 34 straight games.
Labbe scored her first collegiate goal on what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 6:50 mark of the first period off an assist from fellow freshman Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland and & Labrador).
The Cadets added two more goals in the second period with Schwenzfeier lighting the lamp for the second time in as many games with a power play goal off assists from Erin Joyce (Manchester, N.H.) and Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.).
Gallagher scored unassisted at the 12:41 mark of the second period to cap the scoring on the day with her second point of the season.
Junior goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) made all 15 saves to pick up the shutout and improve to 1-1 on the season.
Norwich returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when it takes on Southern Maine in another NEHC matchup.
