Women's Basketball: Norwich Cruises to 69-37 Victory at Lyndon State

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – The Norwich University women's basketball team rode its depth to a 69-37 win over Lyndon State College on Thursday night. Four Cadets scored in double digits to improve 3-1 overall, while the Hornets fall to 1-2 on the year.

Freshman forward Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon, N.H.) put up a season-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of her collegiate career. Sophomore guard Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) also recorded a double-double on 10 points and a team-high 15 rebounds, while freshmen Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) and Emily Bonomi (Plantsville, Conn.) each scored 10 points on the night.

Freshman guard Faith Richards (Acushnet, Mass.) led the Hornets with eight points off the bench, while sophomore guards Brittany LaFreniere (Randolph, Vt.) and Abby Salvadore (Portsmouth, N.H.) contributed seven points each with Salvadore picking up seven rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Victoria Carlson (East Haven, Conn.) pitched in six points as three other players scored three points apiece.

Both teams would go toe-to-toe in the first quarter with Lyndon State leading 11-10 after 10 minutes of play. The Hornets would extend the lead to five before the Cadets responded with a basket from junior Heather LeBlanc (Sanford, Maine) followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Oliver and Shyann Josler (Thetford, Vt.) to spark a 18-1 run in the second quarter for the 28-16 lead at the half.

Norwich continued the barrage in the second half, scoring nine unanswered points before Lyndon State stopped the run on a three-pointer from Faith. The Hornets looked to get back into the game but struggled to hit their marks, shooting just 18.6 percent in the game. The Cadets would score nine more in the third quarter before adding 23 more in the fourth quarter, swelling the lead to 32 en route to the 69-37 win.

The Cadets shot 37.5 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from beyond the arc. Norwich would outrebound Lyndon State 62-44 and score 11 points on second chances.

Norwich will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 21 when it hosts Mount Holyoke for a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup.
