Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice team posted its third straight shutout victory with a 6-0 win over New England College on Friday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
Senior Madison Gallagher (Kirkland, Quebec), junior Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.), as well as sophomores Maki Shuchuk (Madison, Wis.) and Muranda Toews (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) each had a goal and an assist to lead the Norwich offense in its third straight win.
Sophomore goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) made 12 saves to pick up her third career shutout for the Cadets.
Norwich scored two goals in each of the three frames and wasted little time getting on top early with Gallagher scoring her second goal of the season off assists from Shuchuk and Toews to make it 1-0 Cadets just 1:35 into the game.
Gallagher beat NEC goalie Lindsay Powers with a shot from the middle of the right faceoff circle after Shuchuk found with her pass from the goal line.
Norwich (3-2-0, 3-0-0 NEHC) added to the lead at the 5:52 mark of the first period with Shuchuk scoring off an assist from Murphy. Shuchuk collected the puck at the top of the crease after Murphy fired the puck toward the net from the left wing. Shuchuk corralled the puck and then slipped the puck just inside the left post and past Powers for her first tally of the season.
Murphy made it 3-0 Norwich at the 5:38 mark of the second period, scoring her second of the year off an assist from freshman forward Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta). Labbe found Murphy with a pass from the side of the net and Murphy took care of the rest to pot the goal past Powers.
Norwich extended the lead to 4-0 at the 8:38 mark of the second period with Toews scoring on a tap in off a pass from Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland & Labrador).
Senior defenseman Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) notched her first goal of the season with a blast from the point off faceoff win by Jessica Piracini (Tewksbury, Mass.). NU capped the scoring with sophomore defenseman Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, North Carolina) writing a shot through traffic off an assist from Gallagher at the 16:43 mark on the power play.
Norwich outshot NEC 52-10, including a 27-1 advantage in the third period. The Cadets extended their unbeaten streak in league play to 36 straight games with the victory.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Plymouth State at 1 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena in NEHC action.
