Women's Basketball: Cadets drop nail biter, 61-59, at Anna Maria

Box Score

PAXTON, Mass. – It took a full 40 minutes to determine a victor, but after a late rally in the second half, it all came down to one second on the clock as Trafficia Warburton lifted Anna Maria College to a 61-59 victory over the Norwich University women's basketball team Tuesday night.

With five seconds remaining and trailing by three, Katie Pryor nailed a shot from the three-point line before Kristina Russo stole the ball, fed the pass to Warburton, who then converted a layup on the final second before the buzzer as the AMCATS edged Norwich for their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference win of the year.

With the loss, Norwich saw its eight-game winning streak snapped and fall to 8-2 on the year and 0-1 in the league. Anna Maria improves to 5-8 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC.

Sophomore forward Heather LeBlanc (Sanford, Maine) finished with a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds for her first double doubles of the season, while senior guard Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.) scored 19 points and six rebounds.

Despite the loss, Curry became the all-time leading point scorer in GNAC women's basketball history tonight as she needed 16 points to earn the top spot – bettering the old standard of 1,905 set by Albertus Magnus' Lianna Carrero '14 – to boost her career total to 1,909 and counting.

The Cadets got off to a blistering start, opening up a 20-13 advantage nearly halfway through the opening frame. The AMCATS hung tough but some sharp shooting, including a 11-6 run, put the visitors up 12, 33-21, at the break.

Norwich opened the second half on a 7-4 run, extending its lead to 15, 40-25 at the 14:43 mark. However, a 21-6 run by the AMCATS, aided by some strong play from Warburton scoring eight points in the run, knotted the game up, 46-46, at the 7:41 mark.

Anna Maria would take its first lead of the game at the 6:04 mark before the Cadets found themselves in front 58-53 with just 1:32 to play before an AMCAT three pointer from Pryor cut the margin down to three. The Cadets would extend the lead to four on a free throw from Curry before the AMCATS would rebound quickly in five seconds on Pryor's three-pointer before stealing the ball to put in the layup on the final tick to score the game-winning basket for the 61-59 win as the buzzer sounded.

Norwich ended the night hitting 32.6 percent from the floor to the AMCATS' 38.9 percent, while the Cadets hit 73.5 percent from the free throw line and outrebounded Anna Maria, 41-28.
The Cadets are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Mount Ida for a 1:00 p.m. GNAC matchup.
