Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's basketball team fell to the visiting Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University, 95-57 decision in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman center Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) scored a team-high 16 points with five rebounds, while classmate guard Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) added 11 points on the day. Senior guard Evan Tullar (Chelsea, Vt.) would put in eight points with two assists and four rebounds as junior guard Alex Preckol (Westford, Mass.) contributed five points with two rebounds and a steal.
The loss drops Norwich to 6-10 on the year and 3-7 in conference play, while Johnson & Wales improved to 14-3 overall and 9-1 in the league.
After a closely contested battle in the first 10 minutes of the opening tip-off with Johnson & Wales ahead, 20-15, the Cadets looked to get ahead but poor shooting caused the Wildcats to pile on the points. Quarry Greenaway would do the most damage against the Cadets, hitting 8-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc for 23 points in the first frame. Norwich struggled to find the basket, despite Hogervorst putting in 12 points, as the Cadets hit 40.7 percent from the floor and 16.7 from the three point arc and turning the ball over 14 points in the stanza as the Wildcats led 51-24 at the break.
Johnson & Wales continued to dominate both ends of the court throughout the second half, hitting 50 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc as the Wildcats ran away with a 41 point margin at the 1:09 mark for the 95-57 victory. Greenaway would finish the day with a team-high 42 points, hitting 69.6 percent (16-23) from the field with five three-pointers, for the Wildcats.
Surprisingly, the Cadets had a stronger performance in the second half as, hitting 51.9 percent (14-27) from the field and 42.9 percent from the three point line, however it was not enough to recover from the 27point margin at the break.
The Wildcats would score 31 points off of Norwich's 22 turnovers and scored 36 points in the paint, while outrebounding the Cadets 40-25.
Norwich will take the next two days to regroup before hosting Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday, Jan. 27 in the makeup game from Dec. 9. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
