Women's Hockey: Norwich skates to 1-1 OT tie with Saint Anselm

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Saint Anselm on Friday night in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action at Kreitzberg Arena.

In a physical, penalty-filled battle throughout, NU freshman forward Erin Joyce (Manchester, N.H.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season midway through the third period to salvage a 1-1 draw with a feisty Saint Anselm squad.

After winning 22 straight games against league opponents, Norwich (9-2-2, 6-0-1) struggled to get its power play going, despite having nine opportunities on the night including three 5-on-3 situations.

NU freshman goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) made 22 saves for the Cadets, while Saint Anselm senior Lindsey Brown was equally as impressive, making 26 stops for the Hawks. Brown was in net for Saint Anselm two seasons ago when the Hawks snapped Norwich's 44-game unbeaten streak in ECAC East play with a 4-3 overtime victory at Kreitzberg Arena.

Saint Anselm (8-4-2, 4-1-2 ECAC East) scored first at the 6:27 mark of the second period with Sarah Geisinger scoring her second goal of the year on the power play off assists from Jacquelyn Guy and Meaghan Spurling.

Geisinger beat King with a shot short side from the left faceoff circle that squeezed between King's shoulder and the goal. Guy and Spurling picked up the assists after working the puck across the top of the Hawks' umbrella power play set-up.

Saint Anselm clung to the 1-0 lead until the third period when the Cadets turned up the wick and peppered Brown with 12 shots in the period on six power play chances.

Joyce continued her knack for scoring big goals as she banged home a rebound from the top of the crease off an initial shot from the point by freshman defenseman Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.). Freshman Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) got a swipe at the puck before Joyce finally deposited into the back of the net to account for the assists.

Saint Anselm outshot Norwich 4-1 in overtime, but the Cadets carried a 27-23 advantage over the full 65 minutes.

Norwich will look for its 10th victory of the season and to snap its mini two-game winless streak on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Castleton State at 3 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena in a rematch of last year's ECAC East Tournament Championship game.
