Cadets Swept by Lasers in GNAC Doubleheader

NEWTON, Mass. – The Norwich University baseball team was swept in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Lasell College on Saturday, falling 1-0 in the first game and 9-4 in the second contest.

The story of game one was Eric Howard who threw all seven innings for the Lasers allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out six batters. Howard improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

The lone run in the contest was scored in the bottom of the first inning as Dan Gagnon reached on a leadoff single then advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. Billy Uberti then delivered a single that scored the games only run.

 The Cadets were led offensively by senior Devin Cilley (Tunbridge, Vt.) who laced two singles and stole two bases. Sophomore Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) also added a double.

Sophomore Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) was saddled with the loss for Norwich after six innings of four-hit baseball. He allowed one earned run and walked two batters while fanning seven. Whaley fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

In game two Norwich jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as sophomore Cody Lindell (Cranston, R.I.) singled with one out. Lindell advanced on a fielder's choice then freshman Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before senior Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.) laced a single scoring both runners to make it 2-0 Cadets.

Freshman Lashawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) ripped a double to score Schaub and make it 3-0 Norwich, their largest lead of the game.

Lasell struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull away from Norwich.

Baker was able to add an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning but that was the only further offense the Cadets could muster.

Kevin Post picked up the win for the Lasers after throwing six innings of six-hit baseball. He allowed three earned runs while walking two and striking out three. Post improved to 3-0 on the season.

Junior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) took the loss for Norwich after tossing four innings. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk. He also struck out five and fell to 0-2 on the campaign.

Freshman Brian Albert (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Gadowski (Chandler, Ariz) each tossed one inning of relief with Albert allowing one earned run on two hits and Gadowski allowing one earned run on one hit while striking out one batter.

Lasell improves to 7-8 overall on the season and 2-2 in the GNAC while Norwich falls to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in GNAC play.

The Cadets are next in action on Sunday when they travel to face St. Joseph's College (Me.) in a GNAC doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 12 p.m. with game two following at 2:30p.m.
