Baseball: Cadets Hand Rams First GNAC Loss in Doubleheader Split

NATICK, Mass. – The Norwich University baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Suffolk University on Saturday.

Due to weather Norwich served as the home team for both games.

The Rams took game one 12-4 while the Cadets won the second contest 5-3,

In game one Suffolk used a five-run top of the third inning to blow open a scoreless game as JC Colette ripped a two-run homer to open the scoring. Rob Marks hit an RBI single and Justin Knight added a two-RBI single to make it 5-0.

Norwich got one run back in the bottom of the frame as freshman Tim Haggerty (Medfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score senior Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.) from third.

The Rams added a run in the top of the fourth on a Luke Ronchi solo home run and then added six runs in the top of the sixth to take a 12-1 lead.

Norwich got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a solo shot by sophomore Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.), hit second homer of the season. Schaub and freshman LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) both added RBI singles to make it 12-4.

Steve Chamberland picked up the win for the Rams to improve to 3-1. He tossed six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk. He struck out three batters.

Sophomore Jacob Mutterties (Boxford, Mass.) took the loss for the Cadets and fell to 1-3 after allowing six earned runs on six hits and two walks in three innings of work.

In game two Norwich sophomore Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) was the story of the contest as he threw a complete game four-hitter, allowing three runs (two unearned) and five walks while striking out three. He improves to 1-2 on the season.

The Cadets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) hit into a fielder's choice that scored Thomas. Travis Jacques drew a walk with the bases loaded to make it 2-0.

Norwich added two runs in the bottom of the second as Schaub ripped a two-run homer, his first of the season to extend the lead to 4-0.

Suffolk plated two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Norwich answered with a Billy Whaley sacrifice fly to get one run back.

The Rams scored once in the top of the sixth to cap the scoring.

Dan Shields took the loss for Suffolk to fall to 2-2 on the season. He allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks over four and one-third innings pitched.

After the split the Cadets improve to 5-10 overall and 3-6 in the GNAC while the Rams sit at 14-9-1 and 9-1 in the GNAC.

Norwich is next in action on Sunday April 13th for a GNAC doubleheader at Rivier. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
