Women's Lacrosse: Cadets Soar to 14-7 win against Blue Jays

NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Junior Gina Conroy (Amherst, N.H.) scored five goals and added an assist to aid the Norwich University women's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win against the visiting Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

With the win, the Cadets improve to 6-3 overall and 6-2 in league play, while the loss drops the Blue Jays to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in league action.

Norwich freshman Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) scored three goals and dished out two assists on the afternoon, while senior Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) and junior Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.) both scored twice.

Fitzpatrick paced Norwich with a game-high seven ground balls and a team-best three caused turnovers. With three draw-control wins today, Fitzpatrick becomes the first member in Norwich history to record 200 draw controls.

The Blue Jays were paced by Rachel Foster with three goals and a game-high five draw controls. Erika Leitao scored twice, while Dayna Gambino recorded a goal and an assist.

Guarnieri needed just 17 seconds to net the first goal of the game. The Blue Jays responded with an equalizer 1:40 later, but Norwich finished the half with a seven-goal streak, including a buzzer-beater by Conroy to end the half.

Conroy also scored the first goal of the second half to give the Cadets a 9-1 advantage, but the Blue Jays would score the next four goals powered by two goals by Leitao to cut the Cadets' lead to four at 9-5.

Back-to-back goals by Conroy at 14:29 and 10:46 made it an 11-5 game, and the Cadets outscored Saint Joseph 3-2 in the final 10 minutes of the game to hold on for the 14-7 victory.

Norwich goaltender Irene Okubo (Chicago, Ill.) recorded six saves in the win for the Cadets, while Saint Joseph netminder Anne Pitoniak totaled an impressive 13 saves for the Blue Jays, who were outshot 42-17 on the afternoon.

Prior to today's opening draw, the Cadets recognized the  contributions of seniors Fitzpatrick, Okubo, Meghan Grenier (Voluntown, Conn.), Baylie Lamarre (Tyngsboro, Mass.), Caitlyn Trepess (Scotia, N.Y.) and Emily Shrum (Park Hall, Md.).

The Cadets return to action on Tuesday, April 15 when they travel to Emmanuel College for a 7:00 p.m. GNAC matchup. Norwich will also be on the road next Saturday, facing off against Johnson & Wales at 1:00 p.m.
