CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team returned to the win column in emphatic fashion on Tuesday evening, delivering a dominant performance on both ends of the field in a 17–3 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Elms College.
Eight Cadets scored in the decisive triumph, led by a quartet of hat tricks.
Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.) powered the offense with a game-high four goals while adding two assists for six total points.
Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.) matched that production with a three-goal, three-assist effort, while
Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) totaled five points on three goals and two helpers.
Sophia Albright (East Dummerston, Vt.) completed the balanced surge with three goals and an assist.
Caitlin Slider (Thetford Center, Vt.) contributed a goal and two assists, while both
Tori Jarvis (South Windsor, Conn.) and
Lauren Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) recorded a goal and an assist.
Vivian Buntin (Middlebury, Conn.) also added a tally to round out Norwich's offensive contributions.
"Today was a total team win," said Head Coach
Ian Thomas. "We were dominant on both sides of the ball. Our seniors led by example, keeping us disciplined throughout the game and reminding our younger players to run our systems."
Norwich wasted little time seizing control, as Slider set up Jarvis just 61 seconds into the contest to ignite an early 8-0 run. Magoon followed with a strike two minutes later before a lengthy stalemate was broken by Slider, who finished a pass from Albright. Fielder added another goal just 32 seconds later to close the opening quarter with Norwich firmly in command.
The Cadets continued to build momentum in the second frame. Fielder recorded her first assist minutes into the period, connecting with Merck to extend the advantage. A rapid three-goal burst followed, with Jarvis setting up Magoon before Fielder and Merck each found Albright on consecutive scoring plays. Elms halted the surge with 4:31 remaining in the half, netting the final goal of the period as Norwich carried an 8-1 lead into the break.
"I am proud that we were able to get our entire roster playing time tonight," Thomas added. "Younger players got valuable minutes and game experience. Gonzo recorded her first collegiate save and gave us great energy in the second half."
Norwich maintained its intensity after halftime, opening the third quarter with a 4-0 spurt. Merck ignited the stretch with an unassisted tally before Magoon finished off a Slider assist. Albright completed her hat trick with another unassisted strike, and Fielder later connected with Merck to push the margin to 12–1. Elms found the net with three minutes remaining in the period, but Buntin answered in the closing 90 seconds off a Magoon helper to restore momentum.
The Cadets continued their offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter. Labbe finished a feed from Merck before Fielder capitalized on a Labbe assist. After Elms scored its third goal of the evening, Norwich added two late insurance tallies, including another Fielder goal and a Merck finish off a Magoon pass with 19 seconds remaining, to seal the convincing victory.
"Offensively we were able to hit the next level and let our system work for itself," Thomas said. "We pride ourselves on quality ball movement, and most of our goals were assisted tonight. We are at our best when we play team-first, unselfish, passionate lacrosse."
Norwich controlled play throughout, outshooting the Blazers 35-8, including a decisive 31-3 edge in shots on goal. The Cadets also held a 13-11 advantage in ground balls, with Merck and Slider collecting three apiece.
Possession dominance was evident in the draw circle, where Norwich secured 16 draw controls while limiting Elms to just five. Magoon and Fielder each won six draws to lead the effort.
Defensively, Norwich generated 16 caused turnovers, highlighted by Slider's game-high five.
Bailey Ingala (West Hartford, Conn.) earned her third win of the season in crease, making one save in the opening 30 minutes of action.
Kaylin Gonzalez (Navarre, Fla.) closed out the contest between the pipes, logging a save in the second half.
The Cadets will return home to continue conference action on Friday, Mar. 20, hosting the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) for a 4:00 p.m. matchup on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium. Norwich then travels to Simmons University on Wednesday, Mar. 25, for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
