Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I – The Norwich University baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in 11 innings against Great Northeast Atlantic Conference foe Johnson and Wales on Saturday afternoon.
Wildcat Ty Karalis layed down a perfectly placed bunt single that scored Brad McParlin from third base in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Johnson & Wales the victory.
Junior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) started for Norwich and allowed just five hits in eight innings of work, striking out two batters.
Sophomore Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) went two-for-three to lead the Cadets offensively.
Freshman Kyle Farquharson (South Ryegate, Vt.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Cadets allowing no hits and two walks while recording one strikeout.
Sophomore Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) was saddled with the loss after throwing one-third of an inning and allowing one earned run on one hit and a walk, he also struck out one batter.
Shawn Haugh threw nine innings of five-hit baseball for the Wildcats surending just two walks while striking out eight.
Tim Ashworth picked up the win after throwing two innings of perfect relief, striking out three batters.
Johnson & Wales moves to 14-3 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC with the win while Norwich falls to 2-5 and 0-1 in the GNAC.
There was a second game scheduled to take place, but it was postponed due to weather and will be made up at a later date.
The Cadets are next in action on April 5th when they travel to Lasell College for a GNAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m.
