BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Norwich University men's rugby team finished the 2014 fall season with a 56-7 victory over NECRC league champion Vermont to stretch its unbeaten streak to six straight weeks. UVM chose to sit its top players for its playoff bid next week, but it did not stop the Cadets.
Norwich started the first half with five unanswered tries at the seventh, 20
th, 30
th, 35
th, and 37
th minute. The first two tries and the fifth try of the half were converted by junior winger
Michael Dowling. Sophomore #8
Evan King scored three of those tries, including the first two and the fourth try. The second try came from senior captain
Seamus Page and the fifth try came from senior flyhalf
Tim Hunter.
University of Vermont got on the scoreboard as a result of a 40-meter intercepted converted try. This took place at the final whistle of the half. The half ended with Norwich leading 31-7.
Once gain Norwich had five unanswered tries in the 44th, 46th, 48th, 51, and 65th minute. The first try was scored by King, his fourth of the day. The second try by junior flanker Alex Clark, the third by senior flanker Kevin Hoelzer, the fourth by junior center Dan Miller (his first), and the 10th try of the day by freshman scrumhalf Tom St. Pierre to close out the scoring for the game and the season.
"All seven wins this season came from focused preparation that took place on the practice pitch and during video evaluation," said NU head coach
Bob Weggler. "I am so proud how in every contest this season we played the full match with integrity. In one year we went from the worst defensive team in the NECRC to the best in terms of points against. The coaching staff is so proud of their grit and smart rugby."
Norwich finished the season with a 6-3-1 NECRC record and 7-3-1 overall mark.
