Women's Hockey: Top-ranked Plattsburgh downs Norwich 6-0

Box Score

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team's Achilles' heel in 2013-14 has been the Plattsburgh State Cardinals.

After falling in its season opener 6-0 to Plattsburgh, Norwich fell again to the Cardinals 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena in non-conference action.

Plattsburgh State sophomore forward Giovanna Senese scored twice to lead the Cardinals' offense in their third straight victory over Norwich (9-2-0, 6-0-0 ECAC East). The loss also snapped Norwich's nine-game winning streak.

Shannon Stewart, Ali Vakos, Jordan Caldwell and Caitlin Gilligan all added goals as well for Plattsburgh, who is outscoring its opponents 52-1 through 11 games so far this season.

Plattsburgh (10-0-1, 5-0-0 ECAC West) needed just over three minutes to strike first as Senese banked a shot off a NU defender's skate and into the back of the net to put the Cardinals out front 1-0 early. Mia Favretto and Vakos picked up assists on the goal.

At the 12:15 mark of the first, Plattsburgh added to its lead when Stewart was left alone on the doorstep of the crease and slipped the puck past Taylor Fairchild. Stewart corralled a pass that banked off the boards behind the net from Allison Era.

Vakos' speed burned Norwich again late in the period when she took a pass from Chelsea Van Glahn in the neutral zone. She skated in stride for stride with an NU defender and slid the puck through Fairchild's five-hole while falling to the ice to put Plattsburgh up 3-0.

Norwich controlled the play for stretches in the second period, but was unable to solve Plattsburgh State senior goalie Sydney Aveson and the Cadets continued to trail 3-0 heading into the locker room for the second intermission.

Plattsburgh added three more goals late in the third with Caldwell beating Loren Carrier five-hole after Kistner screened the NU goalie in front of net. Kistner and Caitlin Gilligan added assists.

Senese scored her second goal of the game by crashing the net and putting home a rebound off a initial shot by Parke at the 13:22 mark of the third.

Gilligan capped the scoring a few moments later with her first goal of the season.

Plattsburgh outshot Norwich 42-27. Aveson stopped all 27 shots she faced to pick up her eighth shutout of the season.

Norwich returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it travels to New York to take on Elmira and Utica as part of a eight-game road trip to open the 2014 portion of its schedule.
