Women's Hockey: Norwich shuts out Southern Maine 4-0

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Tori Charron (Tecumseh, Ontario) scored twice to lead the Norwich University women's ice hockey team to a 4-0 win over Southern Maine on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East.

Senior forward Meghan Papagno (Wakefield, Mass.) and junior forward Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa) each scored as well, while junior goalie Loren Carrier (Chandler, Ariz.) stopped all five shots she faced to pick up the shut out.

Norwich (16-3-0, 11-0-0 ECAC East) won its seventh straight game and stayed perfect in league play. The Cadets also set a new attendance record with 879 fans showing up on Cancer Awareness Night in honor of local Northfield student Konner Drury, who passed away earlier this month after a long battle with neuroblastoma.

Papagno opened the scoring at the 3:23 mark of the first period with her fourth goal in the last three games to give NU the lead that it would never relinquish. Papagno fired home a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net after taking a pass from Charron from behind the net. Senior forward Haley Gibson (Richmond, Ontario) picked up the second assist in her 100th career game in the Maroon & Gold uniform.

Charron made it 2-0 late in the first period with her team-leading 18th goal of the season with a power play snipe into the top right corner of the net off a feed from Brittany Sharman (Ayer's Cliff, Quebec) and Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.).

Charron increased the lead to 3-0 at the 4:09 mark of the second period with her second of the night and 19th of the season of assists from Gibson and Madison Gallagher (Kirkland, Quebec). The first three goals for Norwich were all scored on the power play.

Moore capped the scoring with her sixth goal of the season in her first game in 2014 off an assist from sophomore forward Maggie Cross (Wattsburg, Pa.)

Norwich outshot Southern Maine 33-5 and finished 3-for-7 on the power play. Carrier improved to 7-1-0 and picked up her fourth shutout of the season.

Norwich returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Plymouth State at 3 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena. The Cadets can wrap up the No. 1 seed for the ECAC East Tournament with two more league wins.
