Women's Hockey: Balanced offense leads Norwich to 5-1 win over UMass-Boston

Box Score

SOUTH BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 4-ranked Norwich University women's ice hockey stayed perfect on the season in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East play with a 5-1 victory over UMass-Boston on Friday night at the Clark Ice Arena.

Norwich (13-3-0, 9-0-0 ECAC East) got goals from five different players as it won its fourth straight game.

Meghan Papagno (Wakefield, Mass.), Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.), Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.), Nicolette Gosselin (Barre, Vt.) and Haley Gibson (Richmond, Ontario) each scored, while freshman forward Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.) and senior defenseman Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec) notched two assists to lead the offense.

Papagno, Cross and Gosselin all scored their first goals of the season as Norwich has now had 18 skaters tally a goal during the 2013-14 season.

Papagno put Norwich on top for good 4:20 into the first period with a goal off assists from Gosselin and Murphy. Just 3:30 later Anderson increased the lead to 2-0 off a pass from Kayla Lascelle (Cornwall, Ontario).

Gosselin made it 3-0 exactly five minutes into the second period with her first of the year off an assist from Guay. Taylor Cross and Gibson each scored power play goals in the second period to make it 5-0 Norwich after two.

UMass-Boston's Alexandra Karlis broke up Loren Carrier's (Chandler, Arizona) bid for the shutout with just 4:41 left in the game to cut the deficit to 5-1.

However, that's as close as UMass-Boston (7-8-3, 3-6-0 ECAC East) would get as Norwich cruised to its sixth straight win over the Beacons.

Carrier made 17 saves for Norwich to improve to 5-1-0 on the year. Moe Bradley took the loss for UMass-Boston, stopping 24 shots to fall to 4-2-3.

Norwich will face its toughest league test to date on Saturday afternoon when it takes on second-place Saint Anselm at 3 p.m. The Hawks are 14-2-0 overall on the year and 7-1-0 in ECAC East play heading in Friday night's game vs. St. Michael's.
