Volleyball: Norwich Drops 3-0 Decisions to St. Michael's, Cazenovia

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The Norwich University volleyball team dropped two matches in the second day of play in the Best Western Cardinal Classic tournament hosted by Plattsburgh State University on Saturday afternoon. The Cadets dropped 3-0 decision to Saint Michael's and Cazenovia.

With the losses, the Cadets fall to 1-9 on the season, while Saint Michael's improves to 6-1 and Cazenovia improves to 3-11.

Norwich's Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) was named to the Best Western Cardinal Classic All-Tournament team.

In the opener, the Cadets fell to the Purple Knights by game scores of 25-12, 26-24, and 25-17. Norwich was offensively by Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.), who totaled a season-high 13 kills on 18.8 percent hitting. Palmer added five kills and six digs, while Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) dished out 20 assists. Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) led the Norwich defense with 13 digs.

The Purple Knights worked 15 different players through the rotation and saw a team-high of eight kills from Lindsay Phenix. Catie Weller and Jess McLeod split setting duties and recorded 13 and 10 assists, respectively. Hillary Miller led the defense with 10 digs.

As a team, the Purple Knights totaled nine service aces, including two each from Chelsey Covitz, Candace Washington, and Weller.  Saint Michael's totaled a .200 attack percentage while holding the Cadets to a .061 attack percentage.

Norwich drew Cazenovia in the consolation round and fell by scores of 25-15, 25-17, and 25-15. Mancini was against the offensive leader for the Cadets with a team-high six kills. Hershberger chipped in with five kills, and Baita dished out 19 assists.

Cazenovia recorded 28 kills as a team and saw a team-high of eight from Lauren Smith. Samantha McCarthy dished out 21 assists in the win and also led the defense with 10 digs.

 The Cadets return to action on Wednesday, when they host Colby-Sawyer College in non-conference action at 6:00 p.m.
