Softball: Cadets fall 1-0 to Western New England in ECAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Norwich University softball team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Western New England University on Wednesday afternoon in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Tournament Quarterfinals.

The game was called after six innings due to a downpour of rain that made field conditions unplayable.

Western New England (27-18) scored the lone run of the game in the top of the second inning when Kim Eckert scored from second base on a throwing error, also allowing Jeana Longo to reach base.

The two teams combined for just three hits total as Western New England's Lauren Zambrano and Norwich's Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) were each brilliant in the circle.

Freshman catcher Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) recorded Norwich's lone hit in the top of the fourth inning, but that was the only base runner the Cadets were able to muster all game long against Zambrano. The Golden Bears' ace pitched all six innings and struck out seven.

Baita was equally as effective for NU, throwing all six innings and striking out six while allowing just the one unearned run. She fell to 12-8 on the year with the loss.

Norwich concludes its 2013 season with a 25-10 record.
