Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt.--The Norwich baseball team squandered two golden scoring opportunities and wasted a solid start from freshman Jacob Muetterties (Boxford, Mass.) en route to a 6-0 loss in non-conference action at Middlebury College.
With the defeat Norwich falls to 3-17 overall while the in-state foes move to 7-11.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Cadets had runners at first and second with noone out after a single by Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill.) and Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.) reaching successfully on a sacrifice bunt. But the Cadets second bunt attempt in a row forced Shimkus out at third and a double play ended the treat.
The Cadets came right back with the first two men on again in the fifth but had a runner picked off at second before two groundouts ended the threat.
Norwich mustered just three hits on the day.
Muetterties threw four strong innings, allowing just three runs. The Cadets got an inning each of scoreless relief from Kevin Gadowski (Chandler, Ariz.) and Nicholas Gendron (Alstead, N.H.).
The Cadets are back in action tomorrow for their first home games of the season, a doubleheader vs. Lasell starting at 2 p.m.
