Box Score BENNINGTON, Vt.—Senior Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill.) had two hits but Norwich (1-6) squandered two early scoring chances before falling to homestanding Southern Vermont (5-6) by a score of 7-0 Wednesday in Bennington.
The Cadets put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the first inning after consecutive singles by freshman Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) and Shimkus before Southern Vermont starting pitcher Adam Michaud maneuvered out of trouble by getting Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) to fly out to right and striking out Mike Doyle (Weymouth, Mass.).
Whaley went 1-2-3 on the mound in the bottom half of the inning before the Cadets put the pressure on again in the top half of the second.
After the leadoff man was retired, sophomore Jordan Britton (Haverhill, Mass.) singled and Sean Gerich (Chicago, Ill.) reached on a throwing error before junior Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.) walked to load the bases.
But Michaud worked out of trouble once again by retiring the next two Cadets and Norwich would not seriously threaten again.
Southern Vermont opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second, picking up two runs against Whaley, who worked two innings, allowing four hits and the two earned runs.
Freshman Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) followed on the mound, allowing one earned run in two innings. Jacob Muetterties (Boxbury, Mass.) and Sam Philbrook (Rochester, Mass.) also worked on the mound for Norwich.
The Cadets will open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday when they travel to Albertus Magnus for a doubleheader.
