Box Score 2 VERO BEACH, Fla.—Senior Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill.) recorded three hits on the day and became the Norwich University baseball program's all-time leader in hits but the Cadets lost both games of a doubleheader Thursday, falling to St. Mary's College (Md.) by a score of 13-5 in the first game and 17-3 to Bridgewater State (Mass.) in the second.
Shimkus now has 113 career hits, surpassing Rob Knox's (2010) total of 112. Shimkus already holds the program record in doubles and is now just seven doubles away from the NCAA record.
Freshman Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) was the tough-luck losing pitcher in game one, surrendering nine runs in three innings, with just two of them being earned. Norwich committed seven errors on the day, most of which came early.
Norwich had taken an early 1-0 lead in the game when freshman Cody Lindell (Cranston, R.I.) hit an infield single with the bases loaded to score sophomore Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) who had reached on a hit by pitch to leadoff the game.
Freshman Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) came on in relief and pitched valiantly for four innings, yielding just one unearned run. Norwich also got its offense going, pounding out 13 hits.
In game two, Norwich held its own against the Massachusetts power for four innings as senior Brad Hudson (Eugene, Ore.) kept the bears off balance for the early part of the game before eventually tiring.
Freshman John Flanagan (West Groton, Mass.) recorded his first two collegiate hits in the loss.
Norwich will finish out the Spring trip tomorrow morning against Richard Stockton. The two met earlier in the week with the Ospreys winning 3-2.
